DENVER — Colorado state senators paused Wednesday morning to honor the St. Vrain Valley School District’s superintendent with congratulations and a standing ovation. Sen. Brandon Shaffer, D-Longmont, sponsored a resolution that commended superintendent Randy Zila for his recognition, received in November, as Colorado’s Superintendent of the Year. “It’s a nice thing to highlight his achievement,” Shaffer said on Tuesday. State representatives Paul Weissmann, D-Louisville, and Jack Pommer, D-Boulder, joined Shaffer in sponsoring the resolution. “That award’s not about me, but about the staff,” Zila said during Wednesday night’s school board meeting. “It was a great honor to be recognized on the Senate floor.” The commendation specifically praised Zila’s leadership in bringing the St. Vrain district out of a fiscal crisis. In 2002, shortly after Zila was hired, the district discovered a $13.9 million budget deficit. The district has a $7 million budget surplus, and has met 95 percent of the goals defined in the adequate yearly progress report, Shaffer said. Also, scores on the ACT and the Colorado Student Assessment Program tests have risen, he said. The Senate often recognizes the state’s Teacher of the Year, Shaffer said. It’s not clear if a Superintendent of the Year has been recognized in the past. Victoria Camron can be reached at 303-684-5226, or by e-mail at vcamron@times-call.com.
